Mexico has a strategic port network that offers several strengths for transportation and logistics, both in domestic and international trade. Some of the characteristics of Mexican ports are:

Strategic geographical location: our country has access to both the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, facilitates trade with Asia, North America, Europe and South America. Thanks to its 11 thousand kilometers of coastline, it plays an important role in foreign trade. Likewise, it is made up of 117 ports and terminals, the most important of which are: Veracruz, Altamira, Manzanillo and Lázaro Cárdenas.

Modern port infrastructure: Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas, Veracruz and Altamira have advanced infrastructure for handling containers, bulk cargo, automobiles, and energy products. Investments and improvements are currently being made, such as the recent announcement of the modernization of the New Port of Manzanillo Cuyutlán, which will have an investment (private and public) of 63,000 millon pesos to expand to 1,800 hectares and increase its capacity to move 10 million containers per year.

Growing cargo capacity: during 2024, Mexican ports recorded a movement of 9,375,570 containers (12% more than in 2023). In Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas, Altamira and Veracruz, 91.2% of the total of such operations were carried out. Their positive results show that it will be necessary to improve their capacity and infrastructure in order to meet the demands of increasing trade.

Multimodal connectivity: the National Port System offers an excellent connection with highways, railroads and industrial parks. Currently, road reorganization and expansion of  inspection yards are underway in Acapulco, Ensenada, Lázaro Cárdenas, Manzanillo and Veracruz, for which an investment of 386 million pesos has been earmarked.

Potential for nearshoring: in 2023,  2.3  million cars were moved (23% more than in 2022) as well as 8.36 million containers, this capacity makes our country very attractive for nearshoring, especially for those companies seeking to be closer to the United States.
